Worked Example on Relative Atomic Mass

1.  Give the chemical formula of nitric acid and work out its relative molecular mass.

HNO3

Use the periodic table to look up the relative atomic masses of the elements.

H = 1

N = 14

O = 16

There are 1 hydrogen, 1 nitrogen and three oxygen atoms in nitric acid.

1 + 14 + (16 x 3) = 63
